Stephen Crockett Wildlife and Pet Portrait Artist Biography

Capturing Nature’s Beauty Through Art

This is Stephen’s Wildlife and Pet Portrait Artist Biography, which not only highlights his journey from a young nature enthusiast to a self-taught artist, but also demonstrates how he captures the essence of animals in his stunning works.

Stephen was born in England on the outskirts of London in 1967. From an early age, his family cultivated his love of nature through regular camping holidays, along with trips to nature reserves, parks, and woodlands. These experiences, away from the hustle and bustle, the grey concrete, and the noise of the city, played a key role in developing his deep love for the countryside.

During these formative years, Stephen spent sunny days wandering through fields and along rivers, playing with his siblings in woodlands and forests. Nature surrounded him, from the wildlife to the sounds, smells, and colours. He heard distant birdsong, noticed the snap of twigs underfoot, and felt the rustling of leaves. In addition, he saw the shadows of grey clouds racing across the fields and observed the sunlight dancing on the river.

As he grew older, Stephen’s bedroom walls were adorned with drawings and paintings of birds, plants, family pets, and wild animals. Encouraged by his parents, he spent much of his time drawing, filling countless sketchpads with his creations.

Moreover, his father, a commercial artist, greatly influenced him. He always ensured that Stephen had an abundance of art supplies and offered valuable advice, further nurturing his artistic development.

At school, art was the only subject that truly engaged him. However, after his father lost his job, Stephen became disillusioned. He began to doubt that art could be a viable career and, as a result, left education as soon as possible. He spent many years in dead-end jobs, gradually dedicating less and less time to drawing and painting.

A New Chapter: Art, Wildlife, and Family

This pattern persisted until, several years later, he met his wife. Upon discovering Stephen’s hidden artistic talent, she encouraged him to pursue his dreams. With her support, he finally decided to follow the gift that God had blessed him with. In 2014, he made the life-changing decision to become a professional artist.

Today, Stephen lives in Pontypool, Wales, with his wife Fran and their three cats. As a professional pet portrait and wildlife artist, he is able to turn his passion into his career. His work has been displayed at various galleries and sold throughout the UK. A self-taught wildlife and pet portrait artist, he specializes in pastels and acrylics, focusing on colour and light to depict his subjects with high detail and realism.

Some of his previous paintings can be viewed in the gallery.

Furthermore, he feels a strong desire to help preserve the rapidly diminishing natural habitats of the world’s endangered species and to conserve the world’s natural resources in general.

‘We are destroying this planet. Each year we lose more and more species to deforestation, pollution and climate change. Each person must take responsibility for the actions they take to contribute to or help prevent and reverse this destruction.’
